Snatch Block! I want to take a moment to thank those of you who support Smarter Every Day on Patreon. I'd also like to point out 2 things about this video. #1. You'll notice Jeremy Fielding is in this video. He's the "Contraption Fabricator" that's started working with me now because of your support on Patreon. He's a great designer, father, and friend. You'll be seeing more of Jeremy around thanks to those who support at www.patreon.com/smartereveryday/ #2. If you'd like to 3D print the Snatch Blocks and pulleys we use in this video they are here: www.thingiverse.com/thing:4022579 #3. I really enjoy KiwiCo and I think you will too. I got them as a Christmas gift for my children years ago, and it was a huge hit. It was after that experience that I reached out to their team and asked if I could advertise for them because of how good it was for our family. I think you'll enjoy it too. www.kiwico.com/smarter It was 3 things... I ended up pointing out 3 things.

@melanieenmats you are right. Gears and pulleys are just more sophisticated levers. And with lever you lose distance but you gain force.

  5. PumarisX

    PumarisX14 hari yang lalu

@Ying Yen Lin It is basically a lever. Pulley is just a divider so if you have regular pulley (one wheel i.e. 2 ropes coming out of it) it means that your pulling force has been "doubled". Work carried out of course stays the same so your weight getting lifted traveled only 1/2 of your pulling distance. Adding another pulley to the setup again doubles the pulling force so now you would have 4x the force but only 1/4 of the pulling distance.

It's called the working factor... the formula is... the number of ropes on the movable sheaves is the working factor of the set of blocks...if 2 ropes are attached to the movable sheaves the working factor is 2:1.. if 4 are attached its 4:1 and so on .. 8 on the movable sheaves is 8:1...you get 8 lbs of pull on the movable sheaves with each 1 lb applied forse on the pull rope... hence an 8:1 working factor

all of this and he doesn't explain why pulleys work. They work because the length of the rope that flows through pulleys gives the same physical advantage as a lever. A pulley is a compact lever.

FYI there not pulley's. You are using a sheeve. A pulley is used to run belts and a sheeve is for ropes to run through to help aid lifting device's.

Honestly, I’m slightly disappointed that you didn’t animate the mathematics of what all is going on. I’ve been thinking on this topic lately from the standpoint of levers: weight, force, fulcrum, classes A, B, and C. Doing the weight & balance of aircraft we calculate the weight, arm, and moment of fixed load and useful load relative to the datum and find its center of gravity relative to center of lift. On bicycles, it’s all levers. The sprockets are like circular levers. Think of the center of the circle as the fulcrum. The radius as the lever. Shifting gears gives you a longer or shorter lever. Same thing with pulleys. The radius is like a lever. More pulleys gives you more leverage. Distance traveled of motion when pedaling a bike, fast & easy when you downshift or slower & harder when shifting up. Now I’m wondering if there’s anything out there like pulleys with derailleurs.

With a pulley, the trade-off is distance. So, if two pulleys are used together, the amount of force required is cut in half, but twice the amount of rope is needed to be pulled to raise the object to the same desired height.
