Hi there. Already own an a7iii with the Sony 85 1.8 and the Sony 35 1.8, so I guess the Tamron should be my next purchase. And then complete the combo. Cheers from Argentina!!

Yo man, off topic but what picture profile do you suggest for lower light?

  4. Bill Reines

    Bill Reines17 hari yang lalu

Man, I just got the Sony Zeiss 16-70 f/4 and now I’m tempted to get the Tamron 17-28 f/2.8 for the wider aperture even with the crop factor

I got the Tamron 17-28mm f2.8, I had the 28-75 f2.8 and liked the weight and the images I was getting out of it, so I thought I would like the Tamron and can't beat the price.

I own the Tamron. Only thing I don't like is how long it's taking to get a lens profile in Photoshop! Even the sigma which was released later has one!

Nice video. I shoot interiors professionally and disagree that you would want the 14mm for that purpose. Even a well corrected lens will have mountains of perspective distortion (near objects get stretched) at that focal length. Even small bathrooms are better shot tighter and stitched. I tend to stick (on full frame) with 18mm and above, and love when I can shoot a whole property at 24mm. Having said all that, I currently use mainly the 16-35GM, Batis 18mm, Canon 24mm tilt shift and/or the 24mm GM. I'm building a kit out for another photographer I just hired and don't really want to pay for another 16-35 GM (though I agree that it is the all around best)...the Tamron looks like a great deal, all things considered.

Tamron? I own it, but would advice to look at the Sony's as even today, such a long time after its release, there is no lens profile to fix the barrel distortion in Lightroom. Pretty useless for professional interior and architecture photography. For video it's fine. It's just the RAWs that need correction, which isn't available.

  15. Dunna Did It

    Dunna Did ItHari Yang lalu

Yeah it's annoying that it doesn't have a profile yet. But it's not too bad to manually adjust the distortion for now.

Hi! Which is the best combo for A6500 do you think? Sigma 16mm and 30mm f1.4 (already owned) or Tamron 17-28 f2.8..... there is always the possibility of buying an A7 series in the future but the apsc is going to stay with me...

I'm a fairly new shooter with an a6400, the Sigma trio, and an 18-105 f4 (all purchased based on your recommendations) I'm loving this combo. I primarily shoot pics and very little video. I'll be shooting portraits, gymnastics in poorly lit gyms, and real estate interiors. I'm about to pull the trigger on an A7iii and plan to get the Sony 85 1.8 and the Sigma 14-24mm 2.8. I want to up my real estate photography and try some landscape and astro. Anyhow, love your channel, very inspirational and informative.

I got the Tamron on release and don't regret it. 17mm is plenty wide for me and 28mm is usually just enough on the tele end. For the price difference you can pick up the 28-75mm and still have some money to put towards the Sony 85mm 1.8 (all of which have a 67mm filter thread).

I have the Tamron 17-28 and 28-75 and in total it cost me 1750 euro. If you buy the G master 16-35 and 24-70 that would be almost 5000 euro! The Sigma 14-24 and 24-70 would be a bit above 3000 euro Even though I am a professional photographer/filmmaker and I can afford all the expensive glass around. I still go for the cheapest because it is lighter and the image quality is not that different. Thanks Dunna for the video!

I totally hear you! The question you have to ask is... “is the G Master/Sigma that much better to justify the cost difference” and I think for most people, the answer to that is no.

  50. Becki and Chris

    Becki and ChrisBulan Yang lalu

This makes me want to upgrade my 16-35 to the 2.8 G-Master, I tossed the f4 on my A7R and was really missing the extra stop for interior photography! Great comparison D!

  51. Becki and Chris

    Becki and ChrisBulan Yang lalu

Dunna Did It yeah the Tamron seemed to preform really well, the weight of that is pretty appealing!

  52. Dunna Did It

    Dunna Did ItBulan Yang lalu

Yeah I totally hear you. It seems to always be right on that line too where f4 is so close but f2.8 is perfect to not have to push your iso too far. And 16-35 really is a sweet range. I do like that Tamron a lot (especially for the price) but that little bit of extra range on the GM is sweet.

  53. The Critic

    The CriticBulan Yang lalu

Not the greatest of lens reviews. I felt like to watch the advert I would at least get some value out of it. Each lens should get a proper review if you're going to do something you should do it right. I mean you have nearly 100k subscribers don't you think they deserve a little more effort? Give them something back for them giving you so much.

  54. The Critic

    The CriticBulan Yang lalu

@Dunna Did It Impressive reply, you took that well and were able to articulately defend your position which I can totally appreciate. I'll revise my position on your video overall, but will leave up my initial comment for context. Context is important. Thanks for taking the time to walk me through your process. Between us, I often get met with "GO MAKE YOUR OWN STUFF" whenever I mention anything seemingly negative about a video. Taking the time to explain your decisions was pleasantly surprising as I often find the tempers and ego's on this platform to be razor thin. You should teach this tact to your associates. Successfully thwarted "The Critic" I should give you a patch ;)

  55. Dunna Did It

    Dunna Did ItBulan Yang lalu

The Critic - I appreciate the viewpoint, I think maybe this video wasn’t intended for you and the specific information you were looking for but like I said, I’ve had a ton of people reach out and tell me that this video was helpful for them so regardless of whether the value was up to your standards or not, it is a valuable video for someone in my audience. I thought it out and I knew that I couldn’t do the video you’re asking for with the time and resources that I had and in a format I would be happy with(like you said 4 lenses was a lot to take on). So I asked myself, “what kind of video can I do that will be helpful” this was the answer to that question and so far, it has hit EXACTLY the mark I meant it to. It’s too bad that it didn’t hit the mark for you (and probably many other people too who might have been looking for something more in depth or with specific visual comparisons) but that’s the beauty of being able to make more than one video... I could always do a more in depth follow up to this. Thanks as always for the feedback! I enjoy hearing from you. P.S. I don’t think you ever actually used the word lazy, I inferred that from telling me I should put more effort in. Not fair on my part 😉

  56. The Critic

    The CriticBulan Yang lalu

@Dunna Did It I have an idea how much time it takes to produce video. That camera in my profile has got something to do with it. Maybe comparing two lenses would have been a better option? I'm just being honest in whereI feel the value of this video was missed. Four lenses is a lot for anybody to review, but man if you're going to do it, you should really show it. I didn't mean to call you lazy, that was unfair.

  57. Dunna Did It

    Dunna Did ItBulan Yang lalu

While I hear what you’re saying, I think a quick overview of features and a general comparison like this can be quite helpful for people (I personally like videos like this because they narrow down what I’ll look into afterwards) as far as you essentially calling me lazy... you have no idea the time or effort that went into making this video. Believe me, lack of effort is not an issue on my end. And I’ve received tons of comments and messages saying that this video was super helpful for people looking for a lens in this category so I think I’m doing alright... it’s impossible to make videos that are the greatest video for every viewer all at once. Also I had limited time with two of the lenses, so this worked best for my time/resources. Hopefully I will eventually get to do individual reviews on all of them!

Funny that - after much deliberation I actually just bought the Sony Zeiss f/4 :D. Soz! Reasons being the Sigma and GM are above my budget, the Zeiss is on special offers here in the UK making it ~50 USD/40 GBP cheaper than the Tamron, and then I do appreciate the OSS and longer zoom range for my style of photography. (I don't shoot wide open much) At original prices (900 GBP Tamron and ~1050 GBP Zeiss) I would have gone for the Tamron, yes.

Ok, there is another aspect though, I can find sony 16-35 f2.8 for 1600€ and tamron for 850 €, which one should I go with? It's not double the price and the sony makes it more reasonable to have zoom lens. With tamron, it feels like getting a prime lens with wider aperture makes more sense as the range is only 11mm. Someone help me :) Can't decide :)

Nice selection of lenses! I shoot a lot of astro so the Sigma 14-24 was the best overall choice. If I wasn't doing astro quite so seriously I'd have gone for the 16-35 GM; it's such a useful focal range that I think it'd soon justify the higher price tag vs the Tamron. All look great though!

When I bought mine, the only two options were the Sony/Zeiss f4 or the Sony GM f2.8. I wanted a wide angle for landscape which I typically shoot at f8-f16. When I looked at the price difference between the two lenses, I could not justify paying the extra for those rare occasions that I needed the f2.8. In all honesty, this decision was tempered by the fact that I also had the Tokina 20mm f2 Firin manual focus lens (that I bought for astrophotography) so I did have a fast wide option already in my camera bag.

  91. Dunna Did It

    Dunna Did ItBulan Yang lalu

Yeah, when I got the f4 it was the same thing for me. Mostly I just couldn’t justify the price of the f2.8 GM. Even though I needed something that could handle low light and give me a nice wide angle. The zeiss is solid but I’m glad I have the Tamron now for my indoor stuff.

  94. Mali Mish Travels The World

Mali Mish Travels The WorldBulan Yang lalu

For APSC you are better off with the Sony 10-18 F4 with OSS. Much better match with focal range considering the crop factor. That basically leaves the 16-35 F4 useless.

  95. Dunna Did It

    Dunna Did ItBulan Yang lalu

Mali Mish - I wasn’t talking about the focal range at all for aps-c, I just made mention that I couldn’t suggest it for FF with the other options but that it might be a good option for aps-c since it has oss(not specifically an ultra-wide option, just an option). That was literally why I bought it and it was quite useful. I think we agree for the most part and maybe we’re getting hung up on semantics or something?? I was just responding to the fact that you called it useless. As for the 10-18, my understanding is that the typical definition of ultra-wide would be anything wider than 24mm(FF equivalent.) So 15-27 definitely fits the bill. Maybe I misunderstood what you were saying though.

  96. Mali Mish Travels The World

Mali Mish Travels The WorldBulan Yang lalu

Situational yes and I assume we were strictly talking about this wide angle range. For this comparison it is not the right focal length to use on a crop sensor. The 10-18 is not an ultra wide on APSC. Its equivalent to about 15-27 field of view. Of course it's not useless for other situations. We may be comparing the 24-70 f4 on a full frame more appropriately with this one an APSC. but to compare it with this batch and the purpose of these wide angle lenses on a full frame, it would not be useful on an APSC.

  97. Dunna Did It

    Dunna Did ItBulan Yang lalu

If you’re looking for that ultra wide equivalent for these ranges on FF then yes. It’s really the only option for zooms. But I wouldn’t say that the 16-35 range on apsc is useless. Focal range is pretty subjective and situational.

@Dunna Did It Yes, it is a stellar performer with a high price. But in my opinion it is worth. Another lens worth to have a look on is the Laowa 12mm 2.8 - yes, it is a manual lens but this is for landscape photography not that much of importance. This Laowa lens is super sharp and almost distortion free. Really a great lens for this money.

Just got an a7iii on black friday with a kit lens. With my weebil lab combo the tamron seems the best fit for me. and i bought an a7iii so the cheaper lens seems like a good call

Nice review dude - very helpful. Im still on the quest for a decent wide for the a6500 the 10-18 f4 still seems the only option and not great vs the 16mm sigma which is non zoom so not very practical day to day. Anyhow, thats my challenge. This video will be re-watched when I upgrade to Full Frame :)

get the rokinon 12mm or the laowa 9mm, both are inclredibly sharp and rather cheap for what they offer. And then crop instead of zooming in.

  129. Dunna Did It

    Dunna Did ItBulan Yang lalu

Yeah there really isn’t much available for apsc in the ultra wide zoom range.

  134. HD BnB

    HD BnBBulan Yang lalu

    @Dunna Did It Wouldn't a 10-18mm be considered a zoom lens...?

  135. Dunna Did It

    Dunna Did ItBulan Yang lalu

It’s not a zoom lens 😉 there are a couple other wide angles that would have made the list if they were zooms (and I could get ahold of them) unless there’s a Laowa zoom lens I don’t know about

  136. Kelkschiz

    KelkschizBulan Yang lalu

That title is incorrect. I started watching this video... And discovered the video is only about zoom lenses... Bummer, as I'm not really interested in zoom lenses.

@Sean Bowen Good point. I assumed it was about primes on insufficient grounds.

  139. Sean Bowen

All of the lenses in the video are wide angle. It also doesn’t say prime lenses, so it could have been either, or both.

Titles are hard to nail. I was running out of characters so I put “zoom” in the thumbnail.

Thank you for a nice and informativ video about the wide zooms for Sony. I have been looking to Tamrons 17-28 and Sigmas 14-24 for a while, but have decided to drop the wide zoom. Instead I have Samyangs 18mm 2.8 and the Sony 28mm 2.0 and the next lense I buy is the Samyang 35mm 1.4. If I need to zoom I just put on my Sony 24-105mm 4.0 - the same goes for my aps-c where I also goes with the Sigma series of fast primes and if I need to zoom I use the Sony 18-105mm f 4.0 when I find the money to buy that lense.

I have been super happy with my Tamron 17-28mm. I love the 2.8 it matches perfectly with my Tamron 28-75mm. The price is right the quality is just surprisingly good. Like you said I really like how small it is and its the perfect gimbal lens since the zoom is internal. I used it on a gimbal for client work this past weekend and wow it was so nice to make those changes without re-balancing. Can't say enough good things about it. Thanks!

I had a 10% view of your 😳 when I saw the video, 10% (780) of your sub count had seen it and 10% of them liked it😂 an tip for testing the quality of lenses is beside shooting wide open, also shoot fully closed. When you start to step bellow f-16 glass flaws and loss of sharpness will appear.

  146. Dunna Did It

    Dunna Did ItBulan Yang lalu

That was exactly why I tested at f8 as well! 😁

  147. Per Einar Ljøkjel

    Per Einar LjøkjelBulan Yang lalu

Not often such happends with me😅 If you did test all at f-4, the zeiss lense will have a disadvantage, since all lenses performe at their best a couple steps in from wide open😳

  148. Dunna Did It

    Dunna Did ItBulan Yang lalu

Haha that’s crazy! Good call. I did tests wide open, f4, and f8 on all the lenses but I didn’t go all the way stopped down.

For a while I agonized over whether to get one of the 16-35's. I had bought the 100-400GM a few months earlier, and my wife was giving me the eyeroll whenever I talked about getting another lens. But the talking heads on youtube all told me I needed a 16-35 for my holy trinity, so I was leaning toward the f/4 to save some money. Then I torpedoed all of that by listening to the little voice in the back of my head that said YOLO and got the 24mm GM instead. Haven't regretted that decision. Plenty wide for me, razor sharp, and just a great lens. Maybe I'll eventually grab the 16-35 f/4 just to have the option, then again that Sigma 14-24 looks pretty tempting to fill the gap...

  150. Dunna Did It

    Dunna Did ItBulan Yang lalu

The 24mm is a killer! I kinda wish I made that choice instead of the 16-35 f4

  151. Najeeb Badalandabad

but if you can get the sony Zeiss for as much as the Tamron 17-28.. then that's where it gets tricky

  152. Marcel Volker

    Marcel VolkerBulan Yang lalu

Exactly what I just posted - here in the UK the two are really close in price now (and much cheaper than MRP). So yes, I agonised for two months and went with the Zeiss because of OSS and zoom range.

As my viewers know, all I’m really missing from my kit is a wide-angle (28mm is the widest I have right now!) - been considering the Tamron for a while, especially since I picked up the 28-75mm, which I’m dead happy with... for only missing the 1mm at the wide end, and keeping the kit size/weight down, think I’ll definitely be picking it up soon! Great little video, keep it up!

How do the extending zoom lenses perform on a gimbal? Do you need to re-calibrate or does the gimbal make up for the weight change?

  161. Dunna Did It

    Dunna Did ItBulan Yang lalu

Depends on the gimbal. Most of the newer gimbals are getting so strong that it probably wouldn’t matter much. And even with the internal zoom lenses, there are still things shifting around so it would still affect it a little bit. I never rebalance though. Just balance with it at the halfway point.

  162. RoshuaJogers

    RoshuaJogersBulan Yang lalu

Tamron, price, relative quality. Good video man. Nice practical approach. That being said, I'm evaluating a new zoom lens for my aps-c sony...working it all out is a booger especially given I have primes that cover the range sufficient and two zooms, one adapted, one native. I have a feeling that as soon as I make a decision and purchase, Sigma will release the exact thing I would like to have: an Art quality zoom that beats the pants off the Sony 16-55 2.8.

Laowa 15mm F2 Zero Distortion. Can put on threaded filters, sharper than all those lenses, no distortion, all metal construction, smaller in size, clicked and declicked aperture adjustment, and macro like abilities with focusing about an inch away from the lens. No brainer
