TOP GUN Opening (Danger Zone)

This has been and always will be my all time favorite movie opening! The radio chatter, the flight deck crew doing their thing, the sounds of the jet engines amping up all leading up to that final salute and the steam catapult launching the tomcat into the sunrise - controlled chaos at its best! Being a military brat, I might be biased ^-^

Amazing intro, yes! Add to the fact most had never seen the detail of planes being flung off the deck of a carrier all the people involved. I'm amazed that more sailors don't get sucked into the inlet of these jets. Goes to detail of training, but also the guts to work in proximity of death every day.

@Veritech Girl reminded me that the most talked-about "variable geometry" aircraft of the '80s-possibly in the history of military aviation as of 2019-also inspired an anime franchise.

My oldest son CPO Keith Bemis, died in the line of duty in 2012. This was his favorite movie and probably the reason he joined up. Keith was on the flight crew, he had a leather jacket, rode a motorcycle, and lived in Cali just like Maverick. When I watch this I can see his life and it comforts me.

I really hope they use at least some of the original music in Top Gun 2. Its part of what made the first film so legendary. And RIP Tony Scott who should be memorialized in the next film.

As has already been written, this is still probably the best opening to a film I've seen, nearly 2020, I'll be 44 years young on New Years Day, I was too young to see this at the cinema, so I got the soundtrack on cassette as a kid before I'd seen the movie, I used to sit listening to it, just trying to imagine what would be happening in the film to each song. I remember my Mum asking a family what the 15 rating was for, he explained that there was a Freench kissing scene in it and that was about it. That all cleared up, as soon as it came into The Loft Video rental store, we headed to get it. I can't really remember watching it first time round, I just know I did, however what's really interesting to me and my own personal love of this film, is that over the years I've watched it again and again, just recently with my teenage son, is that this opening scene just seems to get better and better every time I view it. The Top Gun Anthem in it's edited version here is just so fitting with what's happening on deck of that ship. Harold Faltermeyer gave us movie fans some absolute perfect music scores back in the 80's, Beverley Hills Cop and The Running Man just to name a couple. This though here and then obviously the Soundtrack version right at the end of the album, is just one of the best songs to feature in a big 80's blockbuster film. My cassette eventually just gave up after all the times I repeatedly played that song in my bedroom, with of course my Air Guitar with which I took centre stage to play along to. 🎸🎶🙌❤

When I was a kid, the F-14 was THE fighter aircraft of the 80s. My dad was in the USAF, we were stationed at AFBs with F-15s and F-4s...but nothing could compare to the outright aggressive and fearsome look of the F-14 Tomcat. Top Gun immortalized this great airplane for an entire generation of aviation enthusiasts worldwide :)

I served in the Navy when this movie was being made. Some of our pilots and aircrew were actually in some of the scenes. I met a few of the actors during this time. They used some of our hangar spaces in the making of it.

Danger Zone is it extremely well written song! A true masterpiece! Metal under tension, begging you to touch and go. That’s brilliant, brilliant. If he sang... titanium and carbon fiber under tension, begging you to touch and go, it would’ve had the same ring to it.Kenny Loggins is a true genius. Just saying.

Every once in a while, I just pull up the opening to get a bit of testosterone boost. This may be apocryphal, but legend has it that during the Glasnost period, when we and the Soviet Union/Russia were making nice with each other during this period of "openness", a Russkie admiral and his entourage were invited to spend a couple of days on a nuke carrier and watch the ops. After a day of observing the young crew operating autonomously without the constant observation and control of superiors that the Soviets were used to, the admiral was crushed. He admitted to his exec. officer that there was no way that they could field such a capable ship and crew. He believed the BS propaganda of the time that the Americans were under the crushing yoke of oppression of their military and other leaders and had no heart to be in a fight. His day aboard the carrier kicked the pins out from under him. "We could never win".

Where did you get this opening? It uses the older Paramount logo, which is how it would have appeared during its original run in theaters. Subsequent video releases of the movie - beginning with the 1987 VHS release, which used the then new 75th Anniversary logo - have used newer Paramount logos.
