In it's final season it actually had moved to Cinemax on cable TV. The show was actually all over the place, including syndicated 30 min reruns on PBS in some states (see my other post of a complete broadcast from 1985 of one of those). The NBC years were just it's major hey day in America.

Alot of comedy ensembles pay tributes to "Monty Python" in interviews, etc.. But I wonder if the "Pythons" ever paid attention to SCTV?.. They probably did at some point, but I've never heard them mention it. The excellent quality of writing and performances are on par with each other.. Probably SCTV was more prolific.

@The Vault No, it was from the same broadcast, just recorded from a different affiliate here in the states. You're right, it was only shown once here during a Writers Guild strike that year, so ABC used this to fill time, as I understand it. Thanks again!

You must be from Canada (or had a copy from a Canadian broadcast). From what i've heard, the version there was slightly different in the selections used. This is the US version as it aired in 1988 on ABC (as far as I know, it was never reran over here).

When are people like you going to get it that _neither show is better than the other_ . Both shows have had their ups and downs, but _both_ shows are amazing. Not only that, but to be blunt and frank, _SCTV_ was never going to be as popular as _Saturday Night Live_ , or very well known. That's not fair, but life seldom is.

@Daniel Shumway - great idea, the brady bunch rule. however i'm going with a real pepperoni pizza. i'm an sctv diehard back to when they started. 1st time i've been disappointed. most, but not all sctv skits are total classics, but this special consistently seemed to select a lot of their weaker efforts. very surprising... leaving now, pizza has arrived, brady bunch is on.. it's the episode where jan doesn't want to wear glasses...i'll continue to watch sctv a ridiculous amount of times, but not this special

Thanks so much for posting this! 5 years ago I uploaded my version of it, which didn't include commercials and was missing the opening credits. When it hit 10k views, I got a notice that it was removed due to a copyright claim. Turns out an Indonesian media company which owns a TV station with the SCTV call letters decided they own this video. My only recourse was to ask them to please retract their copyright claim since they obviously are not affiliated with Second City in any way, and do not own any part of this video. I did exactly that several times and got nowhere. Big thanks to IDreporter for allowing anyone to claim they own material that's obviously not theirs, and honoring their false claims without any investigation or interaction of any sort. But I'm super happy to see this special that my brother and I wore out the old family VHS watching repeatedly as kids is back on here (in its entirety!). Here's hoping it stays online!

@The Vault Yeah - I did notice that the audio track was muddled sounding there. Interesting thing about the air date - imdb says Sept 5th, which would've been Monday of Labor Day weekend. However, the SCTV Guide website says Sept 21st: I always assumed imdb was correct, and even labeled my upload of this as such. But, I have a ridiculously detailed memory of my childhood and thinking back, I don't remember this airing over that weekend. I actually remember it being on in the middle of the week, but I had no solid proof of this since, as a child, I edited all the breaks out while watching live. Watching this video with the breaks intact, I'm pretty sure I've confirmed this airing was on Sept. 21st (or at least sometime after the 17th). At 1:43:52, there's a spot for Good Morning America which contains an excerpt from TV Guide dated 9/17/88. But, who knows? Maybe it aired twice...? Just a weird little detail I noticed and thought I would share. I wouldn't be surprised at all if imdb got it wrong.

  73. The Vault

    The Vault6 bulan yang lalu

Actually, youtube removed this about a month or so ago for 1 small 30 sec section containing the use of Rod Stewart's "Every Picture Tells A Story" (during the hollywood dirt tonight skit). They gave the option to have the system auto filter the audio out to allow it to be reinstated, so that's what I did, and that's why the audio goes wacko at one brief moment.

O.K. I have to admit that on several occassions during the two hours, I was not certain if the real commercials weren't some kind of spoof by SCTV. :D Granted, I wasn't born until 5 years after this but these commercials seem so cheesy. :D
