Sub-Zero’s Ice Axe | The Science of Mortal Kombat

Thanks so much for watching Super Nerds! We are now halfway through THE SCIENCE OF MORTAL KOMBAT. This is what happens when we put our best edges (it's really hard to sharpen ice like you would a sword!) on ice and ice analog weapons. Scorpion science is next, premiering here on the channel 4/1 (and I'm not fooling you). -- kH

Keep in mind Sub-Zero is a cryomancer, he uses cryomancy, or ice magic, to maintain a cold enough temperature so his weapons won't melt.

I stopped this at ice phase 1 to make a prediction. It seems to me your going to test based on the force of the "ice axe". But I think the sharpness of the ice would make up a large part of the science behind it. Meaning it would take less force if the blade was sharp enough. But I also think it would be difficult to sharpen the ice without compromising its integrity. I haven't played 11 but in the clips ive seen the axe breaks often and he simply creates another. It would be much easier for an "icemancer" to simply create it with a cutting edge than it will be for you to do it technologically. Also any side torque would likely cause the ice to shatter.

Uuuh... doesn't dry ice vapor pretty much always sink? CO2 is typically more dense than the air around it, so it doesn't tend to float upward in room temp environments.

Can't ice get as hard as granite under the right conditions and temperatures? Maybe not ice 1, and maybe it would still chip or break a bit, but stone axes are definitely a thing so maybe a different type of ice would work better?

So ummm the pykrete axe was very poorly done. The shape of the axe head was the biggest issue. Even if the very very tip of the axe head was razer sharp the major issue is the angle of the tip. The smaller the degree of angle at the tip of the axe head the better it is able to slice. You were basically trying to take a pyramid shape and slice with it. Think more wedge where it stays as thin as the material will allow while still being strong enough to take a high force impact. The test you gave it here it was literally like taking a block of iron and wacking a neck with it and being like "oh well I guess I cant make a weapon out of iron"

What if the Ice takes on a difference structure in the formation of the axis? Like honeycomb or something similar. Would that give it the added structure it needs? Or what if it wasn't exactly water that Sub-zero froze? What if it was something else? Like, for random instance, heavy water?

When we commonly speak of ice we tend to assume we're dealing only with water-based ice. But other materials we commonly only ever encounter as gases can freeze into ices as well. It may be a bit of a stretch on what his powers encompass, but what if Subzero used ice of nitrogen, methane, or carbon dioxide, or even a compound ice of several? The most scientifically-grounded basis for ice powers is pulling the material out of the local air supply to freeze, and those gases are readily available, yet always left ignored by most fictional ice powers. I suspect the sheer supercooling and pressure-control powers necessary to facilitate solid states for those chemicals would be far more deadly than a blade, but would a blade made out of those fare any better from a physical standpoint?

  61. EmoLlama

    EmoLlama3 bulan yang lalu

The axe made by sub-zero is also a construct of cryomancy, and by a master cryomancer at that. Granted trying to use magic in using scientific research is useless, but it is how subzero makes the axe’s, sword’s, and dagger’s. He could be making a constant reinforcement of the weapon so it doesn’t break. Sub-Zero is also uses a lot of strength and force behind his swings so that they can do SOME damage before it breaks. Because his weapons can and do break even mid fight.
