I would love to see that experiment again but with the higher type of ice you talked about ! And also the mess it must have been to sharpen the edges.

bear with me here, folks. i'm a novice prop maker, and i'm wondering why you didn't make the the axe by using a mold so you could have the sharp edge you needed. a two-part flexible mold would have possibly been ideal for that edging. i know kyle said sharpening the blade was difficult, so making a mold would have saved that problem. maybe it was a time constraint, or just something you didn't realize until you were already elbow-deep into the process? i'm not judging-- clearly you put a lot of work into the experiment, i'm just genuinely curious why you chose to create the axe as you did (and if you even think a particularly sharp blade would have helped your experiments at all).

Since this is the brutal west I once saw an old cowboy try to do that to a cow. The old, old axe head flew off mid swing and he whacked the cow on the head with the handle. ...what, a cow isn't just going to up and butcher itself

have you taken into consideration that sub zeros ice may not be regular ice? it could be made out of other materials than H2O that create ice like looks but are way tougher when frozen. Or just heavier like H3O. But it really could be any semi transparent liquid. Also the strong blue tint is a strong hint its not regular water, as regular water doesnt get that blueish unless its some couple millenia old and even then just in much thicker slabs

My only question is why didn't you use actually pure ice for an ax head with the wooden handle before going for the pykrete? Would pykrete have the same cutting ability as pure ice?

I figure Subzero's power could include constantly reinforcing his ice. As any bit melts, chips, or shatters, he could just be reforming that bit. He certainly seems to form ice fast enough to do that.

This was such an unbelievably, ridiculously flawed experiment. If you’re asking the question “can an axe made of ice decapitate a person” and you can’t produce a sharpened piece of ice, then you fundamentally can’t test the hypothesis. Sub-Zero is able to produce a piece of sharpened ice because he’s magic, and I absolutely don’t hold you to the same standard, but if you’re faced with an insurmountable variable that will forseeably stop you from ever testing your query, then you can’t pretend you’re still answering the same question. Might I suggest the alternate hypothesis, “will a flat chunk of frozen paper attached to a metal pole deliver blunt force trauma to a subject?” Honestly, that’s all this is fit to answer.

How would iceman make all the ice he uses to freeze and kill people. Surely he'd have to drink a LOT of water each day to make the axes

You didn't try the original ice axe head and you never tried sharpening either axe head and the second test swing didn't hit the neck it hit the head. None of your findings are valid since all your tests were flawed and incomplete.

Definitely must try it again. Also Sub-zero is instantly creating that axe and decapitating his victim right away, and since it is Sub-zero I would assume that he is constantly keeping that axe at Sub-zero temp the entire time.

I was wondering if you would have poured the pure water ax as one piece, with a slightly thicker handle, them froze it with liquid nitrogen, would it have been more durable? Would the ice's structure become more stable at lower temps, like approaching absolute zero like when you froze the head? Also I love that you used Pykrete an awesome idea, I have been fascinated with the stuff since I first read about Project Habakkuk

  42. Dennis Broschart

    Dennis Broschart7 bulan yang lalu

@nick11crafter I did not know that thank you

  43. nick11crafter

    nick11crafter7 bulan yang lalu

While Ice is stronger at lower temperatures, you would have to take it to those temps slowly, using liquid nitrogen or in the case of what they tried, dry ice, you absolutely ruin the ice molecularly and it will be useless, slow even cooling throught the entire structure is the only way to make it harder like that.

Everyone is bent out of shape over the sharpness off the axe. My understanding of sharpening blades is that the edge is ground into the material using a stone or grinder- requiring friction, friction produces heat. Anyone else see where this is going?

  51. nick11crafter

    nick11crafter7 bulan yang lalu

Yes but you are entirely misunderstanding hpw to handle it, you can sharpen it over time and return it to say a freezer so the heat cannot accumulate and ruin the ice, if you did it all in one sitting (as it seems they did) then its just not going to get anywhere

So many upset people just because they could not make an absolute zero temperature ice axe that was sharpened by lasers. Anyone can redo the test with their own methods, document all the steps, film it, and challange this. That is the great thing about sciense if you think you can do better, prove it.

I'm wondering what it would've been like with a more executioner style axe head with it all being made out of lN2 frozen ice, because I assume the negative degree exposure would temper the ice making it harder yet stronger the way the friodor method works for steels.

  68. Brian Upsher

    Brian Upsher7 bulan yang lalu

The ice axe was never sharpened. Even if it were as strong as metal, being blunt meant it probably wouldn't cut anything. If you really wanted a cutting test, you need a sharp blade. Sub-Zero's weapons are thin with a fine point. I get the ice had to be thick to absorb the impact, but there was no sharpened edge on it at all. If you were to go by a metal sword that was as blunt as that axe, it would surely fail as well
