The mantis shrimp is armed with the most sophisticated vision of any predator on Earth. What are your thoughts on this amazing creature?

2:38 Are you sure this wasn't a mix up with Alpheidae (pistol shrimp). While Stomatopoda (Mantis shrimp) do produce cavitation bubbles (albeit more of a side effect of when they use their claws as clubs or spears, rather than actually weaponizing the bubbles themselves like pistol shrimp do when they "snap" their claws ( P. Koukouvinis, C. Bruecker & M. Gavaises 2017)) , the infamous temperatures of "5000k" actually refers to a paper (D. Lohse, B. Schmitz, &M. Versluis 2001) about when cavitation bubbles created by Pistol Shrimp (not mantis shrimp) collapses. The estimate itself was based on the light created when the pistol shrimp "snaps" it's claws. The paper's I've read about cavitation bubbles created by mantis shrimp (S. N. Patek & R. L. Caldwell 2005) didn't provide temperatures, just speeds and forces. But maybe there was something more recent describing the temperatures of bubbles made by Stomatopoda that I'm unaware of.

Nat Geo WILD please tell us more about how it was discovered that the punch heats the surrounding water to the temperature of the sun. This is interesting enough a piece of data that you would have us fascinated for elaboration!

I'm wondering where the big yellow flash, distortion, sparks, and simulated lens flare came from. Is that what passes for science over there nowadays?

The surrounding water reaches the temperature of the sun, I highly doubt this, if this were true the mantis shrimp would cook his claws on the first hit, that heat has to go somewhere and its really likely the thing generating the heat absorbs alot of the heat. So yeah not sure about that one

I think they make some of this stuff up sometimes. If its strike was hotter than the sun you would see steam bubbles rising. And how do they know what colors it sees? Hey mantis shrimp, do you see this color, how about this color we cant see. I understand you can see its reactions to certain lights and colors but I'm not buying it

"Wild" has many good videos, interesting and educational. Sad deal is that facts are sometimes skewed or dramatized for the sake of "it will make it look more amazing". This vid is generally a good informative creation, until the "fact" of the temperature of the sun thing. PHYSICS shows "Wild" is sometimes more fiction than fact. Nature is plenty amazing without made up drama to make it more great.

You encountered a wild Mantis Shrimp! Length: 6 inches, not much right? Speed: Can basically turn into a torpedo Agility: Can make instant sharp turns Eyesight: They can see polarized light and colors WE DON'T EVEN KNOW THE EXISTENCE OF Durability: Average, though they have a somewhat hard shell Strength: God tried to keep this thing in a fish tank once. It broke out and punched God into oblivion. Can punch with the acceleration and speed of a 22 caliber bullet. Its punch is quite literally a gunshot that produces within the water a cavitation that reaches THE SAME TEMPERATURE AS THE SUN'S SURFACE. Recommended Actions: 1) Find another way to die 2) Run 3) Be literally any place other than next to this thing (I actually love Peacock Mantis Shrimp for their over-excessive relative power, though I imagine keeping one would be quite the challenge should they bust a crack in their enclosure
