As a fellow cancer survivor, my condolences to her family. I do not wish that disease on anyone. As for her, she was a chauvinistic feminist and misandrist. She viewed men as lesser beings and was very condescending and clearly conveyed to the men she interviewed that they owed her explanation because she was a woman and they were men. Her professional "achievements" were founded on the the fact that she was a product of the "to the manner born" element of the American version of royalty. After all, her father was Hale Boggs. LBJ attended her wedding, and so forth.

I'm so sad for her passing. I've heard her on NPR as recently as a few weeks ago, I believe? I remember her reporting on the news back in the 80's. She was a truly classy woman, and the best at what she did. She was a very intelligent, comfortable voice that didn't take any shit, either!

Cokie Roberts implied that Sister Dianna Ortiz, a Catholic nun from New Mexico, who was abducted, raped and tortured by members of a Guatemalan government-backed death squad, was lying about the entire episode.

Cokie Roberts represents a landmark in my view of the American broadcast press. She and Sam Donaldson were raising hell back the 80s about fees elected officials were paid to give speeches and the supposed corruption inherent in accepting such fees, when it was pointed out that both Roberts and Donaldson participated very gainfully in the same activity. Roberts drew a distinction between public officials accepting such fees and her and Donaldson accepting the very same fees, saying it was corrupt for elected officials because they participated in making policy, but not corrupt for her because she didn't participate in making policy, denying her own oft-stated assertion that the press was important to the creation of good policy. She pretended the money she received could not corruptly affect her as she asserted it inherently corruptly affected public officials. That distinction was a lie and a self-serving hypocrisy. I never watched or listened to another broadcast with her on it. I assume anything said was both corrupt and hypocritical. Why wouldn't I have? On the night of the "Saturday Night Massacre" when Nixon fired the Attorney General and his assistant to stop the special prosecutor's probe into Watergate, I learned about if from the Anchorman John Chancellor. He closed his brief interruption into regular programming by saying that the nation then faced the greatest constitutional crisis since the Civil War. I believe him. Today, Trump orders whole armies of American government officials and even civilians to ignore lawful Congressional subpoenas, overthrowing the rule of law and disabling the system of check and balances. The press reports this, but nobody cares because Cokie Roberts has had her corrosive effect on the American public trust of the press. Respect has to be earned and can be dissipated by self-interested and hypocritical abuse of trust. Cokie's legacy is an pernicious one. The hypocrisy and self-interestedness of press talking head millionaires has drained any social influence from them and led to Trump and the age of the lie as currency in our democratic system. I hope somebody in the future cares enough to direct scholarship at this issue, but I doubt it. We are in the death spiral of a self-governing people and my guess is Cokie's values require we all adapt our hopes and citizenship to realities about human nature hat make democratic republicanism a form rather than a reality.

Some have questioned Roberts' objectivity as a journalist. While working in Guatemala in 1989 helping poor indigenous Guatemalans learn how to read, Sister Dianna Ortiz, a Catholic nun from New Mexico, was abducted, raped and tortured by members of a government-backed death squad, who believed she was a subversive. During a subsequent interview, Roberts contested Ortiz's claim that an American was among her captors. (The United States provided significant military aid to Guatemala at the time.) Roberts implied that Ortiz was lying about the entire episode, although Ortiz later won a lawsuit against a Guatemalan general she accused in the case. It was later revealed that Roberts' brother Tom Boggs' law firm, Patton Boggs, was paid by the Guatemalan government to promote a more positive image of the regime, which was widely criticized internationally for human rights abuses. Coupled with her treatment of Ortiz, Roberts's personal connection to a paid lobbyist for the Guatemalan government raised questions about her ability to report on the matter accurately.
