Cover the greek fire with soil and its just another fire. If water has no effect then deprive it with something else, air. Unfortunately ships dont carry barrels and barrels of soil.

BUT & OF ALL THIS OF THE SUCH CITIES & THEIR VERY EXACT STORIES WHICH OUT THERE = FOR AS THERE REALLY ARE = JUST WAY SO MUCH MORE & SO TRULY ARE SUCH FAR TOO BEYOND MANY & NUMEROUS.

@Mr Penguin It's okay. Thank you so much anyway.

  30. Mr Penguin

    Mr Penguin6 bulan yang lalu

@A-huh No, I don't sorry. There are instruments for testing the atmosphere's composition, but i'm not a scientist.

  31. A-huh

    A-huh6 bulan yang lalu

@Mr Penguin Thank you. And by the way do you know any method or some sort of technological instrument that determines the composition of an air sample or just something that can determine the real compositions of the gas that is emitted by this material when lit.

  32. Mr Penguin

    Mr Penguin6 bulan yang lalu

@A-huh Smoke usually carries chemicals with it, because it's a heavy gas. Asphalt should be fine, it's nitrogen heavy but that's not terrible. Acetone is composed of Oxygen, Carbon, and Hydrogen, so it should release carbon into the atmosphere. Lye is however, known for causing severe burns, so that is dangerous especially in gas form. Everything else is fine, Naphthalene might give off carbon as well, but it's not really dangerous.

  33. A-huh

    A-huh6 bulan yang lalu

@Mr Penguin So is it just carbon emissions or are there any possibilities that it also emits harmful chemicals in the air? BTW the formula we made uses Naphthalene, Acetone, Asphalt, Alochol, Quicklime (there was also Lye i think)

The Byzantines had another super weapon for destroying enemy ships, a solar death ray. Multiple rooftops in Constantinople were topped with devises that were used to reflect sunlight in a concentrated beam into the harbor. By pointing them all at the same ship, they could set that ship on fire.

  36. Mr Penguin

    Mr Penguin6 bulan yang lalu

@BigBadSeed At close ranges, and absurdly expensive lenses. They had strong lenses back then, but ours are vastly superior.

  37. Alex Rainbow

    Alex Rainbow7 bulan yang lalu

@BigBadSeed Yes but they didn't have the technology to focus the light enough, watch the Mythbusters episode I think it's called "death ray" or something. It's really interesting and well made

  38. BigBadSeed

    BigBadSeed7 bulan yang lalu

I don't see how. If you magnify light, you generate heat. If you generate enough heat, you can burn things.

They didn't call it "Greek Fire," they called it πυρ Ρωμαϊκόν, which simply means "Roman Fire."

  44. Xaris

    Xaris8 bulan yang lalu

Basically it had various names. "Roman fire" and "Greek fire" were used by foreigners, both enemies as well as mercenaries. To be noted, the terms "Roman" and "Greek" were often interchangeable back then since the majority of the Roman citizens of the Eastern Roman Empire were anyway ethnic Greeks. However, the Greeks, Roman citizens if you like, themselves called it "Ygron Pyr" which means "Liquid Fire". Other less frequent terms weer "Thalassio Pyr" (Sea Fire), "Pyr Kollitikon" (Sticky Fire) and "Pyr Skeuaston" (Manufactured/Packaged Fire) which all make reference to some of its key performance characteristics.

FreeRoamFantasy thing is though it was more devastating then this Video showed seeing as we haven’t been able to replicate it perfectly yet. now imagine you’re an accent person who is still using swords and axes and suddenly fire appeared out of literally thin air then a ship starts breathing fire every were then you are on fire you try rolling in water and It got worse then you along side every one you were fighting with died and you have no idea how it worked the Greeks even had better concrete and we still don’t have a clue as to what they used so no it’s not clearly anything because it couldn’t be replaced for thousands of years and it has no antidote so don’t go thinking you know more then a fucking historian BUDDY

Nobody's even thought of alkaline metals? They wouldn't have had a very complex recipe for the Greek Fire compared to the modern world!. You guys are probably WAY overthinking the whole thing?!?, The secret to it is thinking like an ancient Greek lol!. They probably would've thought, hmm, fire, add in this oil (petrol) to make it explosive and lighter than water, put alcohol in it (methylated spirits) to make it burn on water, then put in these weird products that seem to be very very explosive on contact with water (which would've been later known as sodium, potassium and lithium) Then bang, you have Greek Fire!.

A good guess but you need to sum up all the parts of the equation, i.e. the fact that the substance had to be produced and stored under pressurization, the fact that the substance was self-ignited with contact with atmospheric pressure and the fact that it was used in steam and/or pressurized air canons shooting it over large distances.
