Yet, it seems like such a purposeful, well thought-out, and Beautiful way to interact with the world. I'm beginning my journey to become a "classy lady" now. Thank you so much for sharing!!

I love your videos! Thank you for making this one. I think this type of info is important for everyone to know. One thing that perplexed me is: Why do we need to pass the salt with the pepper every time? What if someone doesn't like spicy/pepper flavors or if someone is cutting down on salt and you volunteer the salt to them simply because they asked for pepper... That could be awkward. And if you pass two items, you could be compelling the recipient to use BOTH hands, which could be awkward. I just think if someone asks for one thing, just give them that one thing.

  28. Tracy Hensel

    Tracy Hensel20 hari yang lalu

HI there! I believe that I cover your question in the video. Salt and Pepper always stay together. The does not mean you are forced to use both. I think you may have misunderstood. You should never eat or season anything that doesn't serve you. I am only taking about 'passing', not 'eating'.

I was born in 1963 and at the age of nine was taught all of these tips by my paternal grandmother. Again in home economics we were taught much the same. It is so unfortunate that most of the mores seem to have flown straight out the window. Phone booths are gone, people don't mind airing their dirty laundry while wending their way through the grocery store and it is nothing short of embarrassing! In a restaurant the other night there was a young couple seated across from each other with a small (under 4) child seated beside either of them and both parents were too engrossed in checking their cell phones to pay any attention to their whimpering children. Thank you for shedding light on a waning art. ;) You're a gem, Tracy

I’m sorry if I’m at a restaurant paying at least $600 or $700 for a meal I’m going to complain if it’s not right. And if I’m at someone’s home and they’ve made something or prepared and they see me not eating it that’s a clear sign that it’s not good so your mouth 👄 shouldn’t have to say anything your face says it all. #ThanksForTheTipsThough

When in a formal setting; is it still proper to keep your knife in hand, but rest it on the plate. Whilst using the fork in the opposite hand with the tines pointed down to feed yourself.

A couple of my pet peeves: When a group is meeting at the restaurant, wait until all are there before being seated. Restaurant staff: do not address a group of ladies-or anyone really-as “guys”, as in “how are you guys doing tonight?” One more for the diners: if the checks are placed on the table before all diners are finished eating, WAIT until everyone is finished and the plates are cleared before reaching into wallets or handbags, reaching across people

  63. Cynthia Patrick

    Cynthia PatrickBulan Yang lalu

Oops. Got cut off: before reaching across the table to hand over your credit card/cash to pay. Everyone should be ready with their payment at the same time, and certainly NOT when someone is still eating! Thank you for letting me vent.

I've never been to a restaurant where you sit down and the waiter/waitress takes your order where you can't order either a vegetable plate or combine various sides and/or appetizers for your meal. Even at the cafeteria style restaurants, you can do this. I'm actually curious as to the restaurants you frequent where they do not or won't do this.

  73. Tracy Hensel

    Tracy HenselBulan Yang lalu

Hi Rebecca! It depends on how affected you are by others. Not everyone is affected by other people, the way some are. I, myself would not be embarrassed by the way another person handles themself. I am an individual and they are an individual. If you are that person, I encourage you to watch my Thick Skinned Video. It may help.

As a former waitress myself, I love how many of these etiquette points emphasize respect for your server and the wait staff as a whole. Some people get a misconstrued idea that being difficult to the wait staff is how you act in a very formal restaurant when that is so disrespectful and all around classless. Nothing shows more grace than kindness and respect to all :)

I have this very vivid memory of watching the girls next door with the girls of the playboy mansion and Hugh Hefner. One of the girlfriends didn’t know what purple arugula salad was while at a dinner party and made a big kid fuss about it and made them make her a chicken breast instead. Till this day my second hand embarrassment still makes me cringe when I think about it.

We entertained friends from Milan, who are rather affluent. I was shocked at the way they ate. They ate like animals, nearly burying their faces in their plates. I was raised to sit up straight and bring the fork to your mouth and slightly lean frontward over your plate, just as you demonstrated in this video. I had assumed it is Italian culture to eat this way, but upon visiting Italy I found that not to be true.
