My mom passed away suddenly in December 2017. The medical examiner's office chose to not do a full autopsy, and only run a toxicology screening, as it was expected that she had passed due to interactions of medications she was on. Despite not even doing an autopsy, it took SIX months before the toxicology reports were returned to us. We nearly lost access to her life insurance, as the life insurance company told us they were giving us one month to get them a death certificate, otherwise we forfeit the policy. Thankfully my dad realized this was illegal, and after threatening to get the insurance commissioner involved, they changed their tune, and let us submit the certificate once we finally had it. I shudder to think how many people, deep in their grief and pain, just roll over and give up when companies try to take advantage of them like that, because they don't think they have any options. The whole death industry is positioned perfectly to take advantage of people at their weakest moments, and from funeral parlors to life insurance, it happens way too frequently, and is exacerbated by the issues with the coroner/medical examiner industry.

"The requirements for coroners in thestate of New York are determined by the county. In most cases, the coroneris an elected position with no minimum qualifications. According to the New York State Commission on Local Government Efficiency and Competitiveness, most electedcoroners are funeral directors." Or equivalent to friends in high places.

Robbin Williams was most likely a murder. We may never know how one of yesterday's top minds actually died. Shouldn't crime scene evidence be public information? Should police body and dash cams not be released online(maybe a week late for security purposes)? There are far too many secrets about what is going on on this planet.

I’ve had far to many frustrating conversations with the Arkansas coroners office. My brother’s autopsy was botched and they ‘lost’ all record of it. Much easier to call an obviously staged crime scene a suicide than to actually investigate it. I’ve tried to get information from them for 16 years and they just don’t know what could have happened to it. Last time I called they told me “well it’s been 16 years so does the report really even matter?”.

My husband used to work at a medical history museum and when giving tours, he made sure to ask the group if they wanted to see the preserved brains. If any wished to see them, he then instructed them to remain respectful as these were real people and saying "ewwww, gross" is seriously disrespectful. I can't believe that man took someone's brain home, had his children play with, and take pictures of it.

Good episode, but can you please stop with the “opioid crisis” misinformation? There is no such thing as an “opioid crisis” - it’s an illicit fentanyl “crisis” (if you will). And overdose deaths statistics, btw, refer to overdose deaths from ALL drugs - aspirin, acetaminophen, antibiotics. Annual rx opioid overdose deaths 2002-2017 ranged between 9,000-17,000, according to NIH, the latter # half the # of annual accidental fall deaths. Are we having an “accidental fall death crisis”? Why not?

$3.75 per capita is still over $1.2B. That's a lot for municipal funding. And (most) state and federal funding is well in the red, so don't expect them to chip in. All these issues you identify are indeed issues, but until our government begins acting fiscally responsible, we can't afford to address them.

call me crazy, but what if morticians become coroners? they're not doctors but like you said, I don't think doctors like to become death investigators. They earn a lot more doing any other field of medicine. Beside, strictly speaking death investigation is hardly medicine. I bet morticians know quite a bit about dead bodies, they're certified and certainly know how to care for dead bodies.

the problem here is that not everyone want to be a doctor. not everyone can become a doctor, you need a specific profile for that like, no criminal record and mental capacity. not everyone eligible that tries to become a doctor, becomes one. the courses are insanely hard and i doubt 50% on the final test is enough to pass, not in that field. and also there is a risk, as was mentioned here, that those who are doctors, don't always have a working moral compass to execute the job. so i really don't know how you would fix this problem. you could for instance ensure coroners take mandatory courses and tests to educate them. even its a little bit and they don't become full fledge doctors, a little knowledge in the field can go a long way.

I want to go to school for forensic anthropology to specialize in taphonomy (basically how a body changes after death) and odontology (study of teeth). i'm no spring chicken and i have some disability issues and that's been my real hurdle. forensics is an extremely important field for many reasons and it BLOWS MY MIND that the coroner system is still in place.
