I've done this very same thing several times now, and taken the mower back to the place that was discarding it afterward and offered to the former owner to have the mower back free of charge (and in working order). 3 out of 4 took the mower back (kind of surprised), and just gave them a quick couple tips on what to do to maintain it, so that their mowers in the future (and this current one), will continue to treat them right as long as they treat the mower right. Very appreciative, and hopefully their new knowledge base will be backed up by ambition to take care of the machine properly.

I have an Ebike from the Gary Fisher collection, but the battery no longer works. No replacement battery is available for the Cargo Transport + Trek bikes, so thats why I got a scooter. And speaking of batteries, I am upgrading my scooter to a lithium battery, which is gonna make it way better. How do you like your Gary Fisher bike? Looks like a street commuter bike in your video. On the Spring Water corridor trail, lets get some spring water to drink while we ride. HEHE - But lets avoid the Hothorn bridge, cause I don't wanna get scraped by hothorns. :P - Just joking to get some laughs lol. Hey, I notice there are a lot of bicyclists on that trail. You don't see many bicyclists riding around in this town unless its Ski To Sea going on.

My Honda has that same engine. Recently as I'm mowing grass oil collects inside the air filter holder assembly. If the engine runs long enough the oil will drip down on the deck. What is causing the oil to enter the air filter assembly? I never tip the mower toward that side either.

I had 3 of those this past summer. Last year I got one for $30. I think they are fine units. I ended up with 4 Honda mowers this past summer I got cheap. One had the dreaded locked up wheels when pulling backwards. You have to replace both rear axle supports. They are a nylon insert replaced with a different type of material. I picked up two free mowers from the side of the road from the same place. It's a good hobby for me. I use the money to buy RC planes, boats and other fun RC stuff.

There's not supposed to be a paper clip attaching the governor spring to the throttle linkage, that's why it's running too fast. That thing you keep calling the governor is strictly for the auto-choke, it has nothing to do with the governor or the speed. Love watching your videos on these great Toros and other mowers, keep 'em coming!

  62. author

    mjg263Bulan Yang lalu

Well I know this was a year ago but...the engine is over-revving because the governor spring (which is the one connected to the linkage that was messed up) is pulled way too tight. You can see in the first video that the speed adjustment bracket is twisted and pulled back, plus the spring isn't sitting properly on the governor linkage. All you need to do is bend the speed adjustment bracket to dial in the correct speed after you get the spring properly situated on the gov linkage. That other linkage and spring is for the auto choke only and has nothing to do with engine speed. It was the old model Briggs engines that used a wind driven governor vane, nowadays they all use internal governors driven off the weights on the oil slinger gear. That engine has bad rod bearings now due to being over-revved, might last a while but it'll go eventually.

I took in a Toro 22" fwd mower. The self-propel runs constantly. Even after I put some slack in the cable. It seems to run the axle even when the belt is not engaged. When not running, the front wheels will not turn in reverse. Clueless. Thanks.

Both very good machines but I prefer the Toro. Another interesting comparison would be between the Toro in this video and a Toro Super Recycler. The Super version is supposed to have better under-deck baffling and of course the nice aluminum housing which gives even better results. Love the Toros, been a Toro owner and maintainer since the 1960's Whirlwind models with the impulse crank-up starters!

Had same one worked like a charm, and cuts great most the time, i did not take the tank off i just took off the hose from gas to carb bowl held carb bowl line up not to lose the 50:1 and sea foam i put in then i took off the bow check it and it was clean so i just cleaned all the ports out and im good now think mine was bad gas mostly but anyhow always use non ethanol gas some people do not know that or get the additive to take the ethanol out of it from autozone or wal-mart etc but mine was good after replacing the air filter too we are cuttin grass again! Thanks for the video saved me some time on tool sizes i would need!

Just seen this video having just got back into gardening after a lot of years and intend getting a new rotavator. Its been 40 years since I used a petrol rotavator but if I remember the rear wheels should be taken off a front Tyne rotavator prior to use and the drag bar used for cutting depth and speed of cut, as fenderstratguy says the drag bar is upside down. but an educational video. thanks.

It seems you're a huge Briggs engine fan. So be it. But guess what ?? It's basically a 1930's flathead engine modified with an OHV head and push-rods. That's it ! They're very cheap to build with tolerances so loose that machining can be done with a coarse file, crankshafts that are rarely if ever balanced, and a host of built-in reliability problems. But I don't mind, because I make a lot of money fixing those old crap engines. Just used a portion of the profits and paid cash for a new pickup truck. So keep buying Briggs engine products, I like making lots of money.

I have one of these that I bought new in 1999 for the Y2K scare. Besides the oil and air filters and spark plug, I've replaced only the fuel tank grommet and fuel line. The 4000 XL was used only occasionally for power outages until 2012 when the derecho wind came through. It ran for 10 days and nights during that outage. I changed the oil and filter every two days (50 hours). There was power in the local town so I was able to get gasoline and supplies. I have not kept a record, but I know that since 1999 it has sit for more than two years more than a couple of times. Maybe I'm just lucky, but I have never used any fuel stabilizer and I don't run the carburetors dry on any of my small engines, but I do turn off the fuel valves. I do not have any issues with starting. I even have a 1976 Gravely walk behind (you know the kind that you use a strap to start) and it starts sometimes on the first pull in the spring after sitting all winter. What I think is the key, is the grade of gasoline. I use only the middle grade for my small engines. Even in the 2 cycle mix for the string trimmers and chain saws. That's my two cents.
